Short BWWM Book Excerpt: The Quarterback's Baby
Vega Jameson was working the lonely Wednesday afternoon shift at Dr. Wagner's Veterinary Office. She couldn’t believe Arya had convinced her to take this shift. Vega had given up a date with an incredibly attractive guy she’d met online just for this extra shift. Hey, Vega needed the money far more than she needed a man in her life. Plus the way Arya had begged her, Vega felt guilty for saying no.
During the summer, the town was dead. Vega lived in a small central New York town with a large state university. Without the students, the town was about as lively as a cemetery. Vega couldn’t believe she was stuck here for the entire summer. The only thing remotely interesting that happened here during the summer was the big major league football training camp. At least it would have been interesting if Vega gave a damn about football.
I need to quit this damn job. Vega thought to herself. Since the office was empty (as usual), Vega checked the back to make sure Dr. Wagner was preoccupied. She was. Dr. Wagner was busy tending to some poor abandoned cat in the back. Vega took that opportunity to take a long bathroom break. She walked into the bathroom and caught sight of herself in the mirror.
I look awful. Vega thought to herself. Since she’d picked up a last minute shift, Vega hadn’t had the chance to do her usual prep for work. Despite her insecurity, Vega was far from ugly. Vega’s skin had a beautiful dark color so dark that it was almost purple. She had short natural hair that she preferred to wear in long black Senegalese twists that fell down the middle of her back. There was nothing more soothing to Vega than spending a Sunday at the salon getting her hair done even if her scalp hurt like hell for a few days afterwards…
Vega filed her nails in the bathroom and then pulled her makeup bag out of her purse. It didn’t seem like anyone would be coming into the office anyways. Dr. Wagner had no appointments until 4. Vega started doing her makeup and just as she was putting the finishing touches on her lips, she heard the front door open. Shit!
Vega finished applying her grape colored lipstick and rushed out. Unfortunately, her boss had gotten to the customer first. Dr. Wagner was speaking with the man at the counter while Vega tried to tiptoe onto the scene hoping she could take over and escape Dr. Wagner’s wrath.
“Vega! We have a customer here who you kept waiting…”
She turned to the man, “I’m sorry Mr. Patterson. It’s impossible to find good help these days.”
Mr. Patterson let out an uncomfortable smile.
“I think she can handle making the appointment from here,” He suggested.
Dr. Wagner was blushing — Vega couldn’t figure out why.
“Oh no… I wouldn’t want your appointment to get messed up… Vega! Where did you put my appointment book?” She said, frantically searching around the front desk.
Vega pointed to the book right in front of Dr. Wagner’s eyes
“It’s right there,” She mumbled.
Dr. Wagner picked it up and flipped through it confused for a few minutes.
“Oh forget it! Vega! Make an appointment for Mr. Patterson and don’t mess it up,” She hissed before returning to the back.
Vega quietly made her way to the counter and mumbled, “Hi, what can I help you with today sir.”
The man standing across the counter didn’t reply for a while, he just smiled. Vega raised her eyebrows as if to say “Yes??”
“She’s a bit nutty isn’t she?” He whispered.
Huh? Vega realized that he was talking about her boss.
“Yeah she is. I’m so going to get chewed out for not being here. But you’re the only customer we’ve had all day. What can I help you with?”
“I need an appointment for my dog… Angel… She’s a pug. Anyways. I’m from out of town and I brought her here but she’s been acting real funny lately. I just want someone to take a look at her tomorrow. I can bring her by after practice,” He said.
“Oh… Are you here for SUNY preseason?” Vega asked.
“No…” He replied.
He seemed a bit shy. Vega realized that there was something familiar about him too.
“Wait a second do you play for the — .”
“Well that explains Doctor Wagner,” Vega replied.
Maybe it was because she’d just found out he was in the NFL, but Vega began to see that the man in front of her was cute. He looked a hell of a lot better than the usual white guys that traipsed around her town. He was tall, had a gorgeous white smile and he was clearly muscular. His arms and shoulders bulged through his black t-shirt.
“Um so when do you want that appointment?” Vega asked. Suddenly, she didn’t feel very composed and she felt grateful that she’d put on her makeup in the back room.
“How about four?” He asked.
Vega nodded. “That sounds good. Thanks for coming in today. Can I get a number to remind you of the appointment?”
“Is that a ploy to get my number?” He asked.
Vega couldn’t tell if he was joking or not.
She looked up wide eyed.
“I’m teasing,” He said with an impish glint in his eye.
Vega knew she was being unreasonably awkward. She couldn’t wait for this entire exchange to be over.
“Hey, if you want to, you could come down to practice today. It’s open to the public and afterwards we can get a drink or something…”
“Are you still joking?”
“Not this time.”
Vega was giddy. She had just been asked out by someone who actually played for the NFL. Whether or not she knew anything about football, she knew this was a big deal.
“Wow… Well… sure! I’d love to,” Vega replied.
“Great well I’ll see you then,” He said.
“I’m Caelan by the way.”
“Well I’ll see you later Vega,” He said, flashing his signature grin.
Just like that he was gone and Vega was left to process what had just happened alone. Her time to process was short lived. Dr. Wagner burst into the reception area and Vega could tell she was on the war path.
“Vega! Can you explain to me why you weren’t in the office when a famous customer walked through the door!” She hissed.
“I was in the bathroom.”
“No… using the toilet,” Vega said with a huff.
“Well… I’m sure you made a fool of yourself in front of him. When is his appointment? I can’t wait for him to get back. This could be my chance Vega! I’m tired of dealing with little boys you know? A guy like him… he’s a real man. He could treat me right. Do you think I should get a haircut?”
Vega didn’t have it in her to tell her boss that Caelan had just asked her out. She didn’t think Kat Wagner would have appreciated that very much either.
“His appointment is tomorrow around four.”
“Good. Excellent. I’m glad you didn’t screw that up. You know Vega… I don’t think you should be too jealous.”
“Jealous of what?”
“Well, I’m just saying… I worked hard throughout my life. That’s why I have a successful veterinary practice and I can find successful men to appreciate me.”
Before Vega could unleash her anger, the cat that Dr. Wagner was caring for in the back let out an aggressive meow.
“Now stay here Vega and don’t miss any more customers,” She said before scurrying to the back.
Vega couldn’t wait for her shift to be over. She couldn’t believe what her boss had said to her. How could she think that Vega didn’t work hard? Vega worked this shitty job to make ends meet. That didn’t mean she didn’t have bigger goals or aspirations. Vega counted down the minutes to when she could bust out of Dr. Wagner’s office. The perfect revenge would be going down to Caelan’s practice and enjoying every minute of it.
